The Countdown To Princethorpe's Summer Fest Is Underway

A brand-new summer festival full of magic, music and much more is coming to Princethorpe College at the end of June.

A brand-new summer festival full of magic, music and much more is coming to Princethorpe College at the end of June. Organised by the College’s Commercial Enterprises team and Princethorpe’s PTA, Princethorpe’s Summer Fest promises to be an unforgettable summer festival experience for all the family. Building on the success of the PTA’s traditional Summer Fête and Motoring Festival, Princethorpe Summer Fest 2025 takes place on Sunday 29 June from 11.00am to 7.00pm.

As the countdown to the new Summer Fest started in earnest this week, on Wednesday 4 June, Headmaster Grove du Toit welcomed Ruth Hurford-Jones from the College’s PTA and Yousaf and Amy Hussain from Carter & King, Rugby’s No.1 selling estate agent, who are generously sponsoring the event, to unveil a giant banner advertising the Summer Fest. The banner will be sited at the bottom of the College drive to encourage the wider community to come and join in all the fun.

Summer Fest 2025 includes a non-stop programme of entertainment on the main Festival Stage, featuring live performances by Krisis DJ, Mac Wood, Molly Gone Mad and James Byrne, as well as showcasing the talents of local groups including the Rock Choir, Local Vocals, the Collaboration Choir, the cast of the College’s recent musical Newsies Jr, Love Ballet Dance Company, Crescent School’s Choir, a Taekwondo demonstration and Princethorpe’s Dance Company.

Across the site, visitors will be able to explore the College’s GCSE and A-level Art, Photography and Design Exhibition, part of Warwickshire Open Studios, the always popular Motoring Festival with its extensive display of interesting, classic and vintage vehicles and try their hands (and feet) on the College’s Climbing Wall. Also on offer all day will be Activities and Games including Crazy Golf, Glitter and Tattoos and Team Super Sports fun and last but by no means least the unmissable PTA Fun Zone where for a one off £10 wristband charge visitors can enjoy unlimited access to Total Wipeout, a Surf Simulator, an inflatable Helter Skelter and other attractions.

Attending the event will be a fantastic selection of artisan craft stalls offering plenty for everyone to discover and explore. There will also be a mouthwatering lineup of local food and drink vendors to suit all tastes from pizza to tacos, tapas, burgers and vegan options, plus a full bar with gin, prosecco and pimms on offer. There will even be specially brewed Princethorpe Ale on sale along with limited edition jars of Princethorpe Honey produced by the College beekeeper.

College Headmaster, Grove du Toit, comments, “Plenty of work has gone in behind the scenes to put together Princethorpe’s first Summer Fest. It’s going to be a great family day out with something for everyone, from music, arts and craft lovers to classic car fans and foodies as well as providing plenty of entertainment and activities for all to enjoy.”

Flagship Summer Open Evening Showcases College To Prospective Parents

On Wednesday 4 June, Princethorpe welcomed prospective parents and pupils into school for the College’s flagship Summer Open Evening.

The school and grounds looked their best and everywhere was a hive of activity.  Departments had prepared informative displays and had plenty of exemplar work on show, staff and current pupils were on hand to take questions and talk with parents and of course there were plenty of fun subject-related activities for younger (and older) visitors to enjoy.  Rewards were on offer for all those who ‘had a go’ with stickers to collect and a choice of Princethorpe prizes for the children to collect on their way home.

Outside many chose to meet our beekeeper up in Switzerland, watch the tennis display on the courts, test themselves in sports challenges on the astro  or visit the Team Super Sports display.  In the Sports Centre the climbing wall was a very popular attraction. Across the school, classrooms were abuzz with parents and children exploring subjects such as Science, IT, Maths, DT, Art, English and Languages.

Music entertained our visitors in the Chapel and the Newsies Jnr open rehearsals attracted audiences to the Clarkson theatre.  There were scones to taste in Food and Nutrition, explosive Chemistry experiments to impress and even the archives in the Library to explore.

Grove du Toit, Headmaster, welcomed parents with an inspiring address, talking about the school, its plans for the future and the ‘Spirit of Family’ ethos that allows Princethorpe to help every child to succeed.

Over 180 families attended the evening, many completely new to the school.  For all it was a great chance to soak up the special Princethorpe atmosphere and to get a flavour of day-to-day life.  All evening enthusiastic staff and pupils extolled the virtues of Princethorpe’s tailored individual approach.

A huge thank you to all the staff, pupils, prefects and parents who helped on the evening and to all those involved in the preparations.  The school looked amazing and the feedback from our visitors as they left was very positive.

Success For Princethorpe At Two Day Event

Princethorpe College was once again delighted to host the National Schools and Riding Clubs Two-Day Event. Run in conjunction with Stoneleigh Riding Club, 124 competitors took part in a two-day competition, over the May bank holiday weekend, 24 to 25 May. One of only a few ‘long format’ events open to schools and riding clubs in the UK. It included dressage and show-jumping on the Saturday and roads and tracks, steeplechase and cross-country on the Sunday.

Princethorpe College has been involved with this event for 21 years and this was the tenth year the College has hosted the event on the Princethorpe estate. The course looked magnificent against the backdrop of the Princethorpe Tower and included classes at 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 100cm to appeal to a wide range of riders. The year’s event welcomed competitors from across the country.

Princethorpe College had riders competing at all heights and had good results across the classes with the school’s 80cm team ‘Cloisters’ finishing first overall in the Schools competition and also claiming the Gold Medal in the Independent Schools Association’s class. The school just missed out on more medals in the 70cm class where team ‘Benedictine’ placed fourth.

Riding for 70cm team were Darcey Wilcox-Smith, 10th on Court Chester, Charlotte Nichols, 13th on Birtley Royal Guardsmen and Darcey Edwards on Tambrook This Is Me.

Representing Princethorpe in the 80cm team were Lucile Bell-Barth who as well as her team rosettes also took individual Silver in both the Schools’ and ISA classes after finishing second on Farrell Hill Boy. Isla Edwards finished in individual 4th place overall on Ricardo Diamond and should be commended after posting a super dressage score (best in class) at the event. Emilie Bell-Barth finished in overall 5th place on Laburnum Prince and Jess Belcher completed the team on Hendir Phoebe’s William. Also competing in the 80cm competition was Jess Hedgecock on Ballylee Tower.

In the 90cm class, Lizzie Nichols placed 6th on Tickety Boo and also won highest placed Warwickshire rider. Also representing Princethorpe was Jess Hedgecock on Golden Girl.

Our congratulations go to Shebbear College from Devon who took Gold in the 70cm and 100cm classes and to The Grange School from Cheshire who won the 90cm class. It was lovely to welcome their talented riders to the event.

Grove du Toit, Headmaster, said, “The College was delighted to welcome school and riding club competitors to the Princethorpe estate. It was great to see such a strong presence of school participants, many of whom had travelled long distances to take part in the competition. It was also wonderful to welcome former pupil and College equestrian team stalwart, OP, Claudia Newman to the event. Our thanks go to members of Stoneleigh Riding Club, our Grounds and Estates Teams and all the volunteers, without whom we would have been unable to stage such an exciting competition.”

Congratulations to all the riders who took part we hope you enjoyed competing at Princethorpe.

College Drive Enjoys A Stunning Makeover With House Yarn Bombing

The house teams at Princethorpe took part in a ‘Yarn Bombing’ competition on Wednesday 4 June decorating the trees on the school drive.

The house teams at Princethorpe College took part in a ‘Yarn Bombing’ competition on Wednesday 4 June decorating the trees on the school drive. Their super effort resulted in a wonderful and colourful ‘makeover’ just in time to welcome visitors to the College’s Open Evening that night.

Yarn bombing is a form of street art, unofficial decoration which spreads good cheer. Knitters and crocheters from across the school responded brilliantly to the House teams’ request for contributions, designing and creating a wonderful array of decorations to use in the yarn bomb. Assembling it all was a real community effort too, with the House teams enjoying the tricky challenge of piecing together all the donations.

Austin were pronounced the winners with a tree that the judges felt had great visual impact and had clearly got lots of pupils involved, Benet were 2nd, More 3rd and Fisher 4th.

The overall end result was simply stunning, a huge well done to everyone who took part.

Benet Are Our House Bake Off Best Bakers

House Bake Off is always a popular competition and this year we once again had another tantalising display of 37 creative entries. The ‘Games’ theme produced an incredible array of cakes with football and cricket pitches, snooker tables, golf greens, tennis courts and a whole array of board games from chess to snakes and ladders among the many different designs.

At lunchtime, on Thursday 5 June, House Activities Co-ordinator, Meg O’Gorman led a team of cake enthusiasts in the challenge of judging all the entries, considering taste, skill, decoration and relevance to the theme. Staff and pupils had crowded in at break time to admire all the amazing cakes and vote for their favourites.

Miss O’Gorman, said, "Our House bakers are just incredible, the effort and creativity put into making these cakes was amazing. Congratulations to Benet who are the winners this time in both the taste and decoration categories."

Our favourite though, has to be Year 8 Eloise's Princethorpoly cake which is just incredible and very on brand!

A huge well done to everyone who took part!

OPs Summer Supper Reunion - Calling The Leavers Of 1975, 1985, 1995, 2005 And 2015

OPs who left the College in 1975, 1985, 1995, 2005 and 2015 (or those in the equivalent year groups) are warmly invited back to the College for the OPs Annual Summer Supper Reunion on Friday 27 June.

Friday 27 June 2025 - 6.00pm optional tour, 7.00pm Drinks Reception, 7.45pm supper

We are looking forward to welcoming back former pupils who are celebrating their 50th, 40th, 30th, 20th and 10th anniversaries of leaving. Leavers from other year groups are also most welcome to share in the celebrations.

Comments Alumni Relations and Development Officer, Caroline Spencer, "We had a wonderful turnout last year, and know that many OPs are keener to come to these events if they can be sure of seeing some familiar faces.  As we sadly do not hold contact details for all our alumni, we encourage anyone who is in touch with an OP to spread the word, so that as many as possible can come and enjoy this special reunion."

The Summer Supper is an established event in the OPs calendar, attracting a large number of OPs, along with former and current members of staff. The supper is preceded by an optional tour and a Drinks Reception in the Quad. Every year, the OPs also recognise long-standing members of staff and say farewell to any staff leaving the College. You can read about last year's reunion on Princethorpe Connect, here.

If you are an OP, or know an OP, who would like to attend, you can sign up via the event page on Princethorpe Connect by Wednesday 18 June to secure your place.

Next term your child will be taking part in Rugby and Hockey and following national governing body and school guidelines, it is compulsory that your child wears a mouthguard during these sports.

Therefore, in the interest of your child’s safety, we have invited OPRO, who specialise in the provision of custom made mouthguards, to visit the school on Thursday 4 September from 12.30pm – 2.30pm.

OPRO offer a number of benefits with their service:

  • Prices start from £41.99

https://opro.info/PrincethorpeCollege

  • Buy one mouthguard and get a second mouthguard for half price
  • Your child will receive a complimentary Snap-Fit mouthguard at the dental visit so they have something to use whilst they wait for their Custom mouthguard to be delivered
  • Each mouthguard comes with a dental warranty which covers up to £22,500
  • Your child’s name and school  name will be included on the mouthguard and case
  • OPRO store all of the models in case a replacement is required
  • All mouthguards carry the CE mark

If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity and have your child fitted, please place an order with OPRO on their website www.opro.com.

If you have any questions about the products or OPRO’s service please contact their customer care team directly on 01442 430690 or email info@oprogroup.com.

Once all the bookings have been confirmed we will inform you of the time slot that your child will be having their fitting.

Pupils do not need a custom made mouth guard to participate in sport, they can use mouthguards that can be purchased from the school shop or any sports shop.

Many thanks

Celebrating Pupils' Achievements Outside Of School

It is always great to be able to share news of pupils' co-curricular achievements outside of school.

Lower Sixth Former, Karum Sandhu, has just been recognised by Alcester Town Football Club. Karum was presented with the Special Clubman Trophy. The trophy is awarded to only one player out of the 28 teams at the club and recognises someone who had gone the extra mile. In Karum's case the trophy was given in recognition of  the commitment and dedication he has shown in never missing a match in the 11 seasons he has been playing at the club. An outstanding achievement, well done to Karum!

Duke Of Edinburgh's Award - Reminder

Information for 2024-2025 Duke of Edinburgh participants.

All participants - This year's scheme has now been running for over six months and participants should be requesting Assessor Reports from their Assessor for any three or six month activities. Participants should be proactive in this ensuring the sections are signed off in good time to complete their award. The qualifying expeditions all take place next half term which means Bronze and Silver participants can finish all elements by the end of this academic year.

Participants are reminded to check their Teams messages. Please check in with your participant to ensure they are making full use of the support on offer. There is lots of information under the 'Files' tab including a document with links to free online courses that would count towards the Skill or Volunteering sections.

Participants are encouraged to use Teams chats with their Young Leader or individually with Tamsin Frost, Natalie Hardy or Sion Murphy for any extra help.

The presentation, expedition dates and other useful information including the links to online courses is still live on My School Portal under the Co-curricular - Princethorpe page. Link here.

For any Duke of Edinburgh's Award enquires please use the dedicated email dofe@princethorpe.co.uk with the subject DofE-B, S or G-Surname.

Raise Money Whilst Shopping Online With Easyfundraising - Reminder

Raise money for the school from the comfort of your own home whilst shopping online with Easyfundraising.

Yes it’s true, if you sign up to Princethorpe College Easyfundraising, when you shop online the retailer will give us a percentage of your spend at no extra cost to you. It is a reward and thank you for shopping with the retailer and free money in the PTA pot to spend on the much needed extras in the school.

We DO keep reminding you about Easyfundraising, however we have raised £715 so far this school year with 79 supporters including parents, family and friends. Just think of what this amount could be with a fraction more of you signed up!

It is incredibly easy! If you are not already registered, please visit the link here or search for Easyfundraising and find Princethorpe PTA. Once registered you can set automatic tracking or go through the Easyfundraising App to purchase and the PTA will receive a percentage of what you spend!

We are hoping to buy a 3D printer for the Technology Department with the money raised via Easyfundraising. This will really make a difference to the department and students!

Thank you.

Bus Services 2025-26 – Bookings Opening Soon

Current bus users will very shortly be receiving an email from Vectare inviting them to make their bus services booking for 2025-2026.

Current bus users (who had not given notice by this half term or who are not leaving the school this summer) will very shortly be receiving an email from Vectare inviting them to make their bus services booking for 2025-2026.

There have been changes to the routes and some timings, so please do familiarise yourself with the service your child is going to use.  In addition, from September as publicised we will be introducing three late bus routes, Leamington/Stratford, Coventry/North Rugby and South Rugby/Southam stopping at a limited number of hub stops from Monday to Thursday.

If you foresee your child using the late bus service on a regular basis please speak to Vectare who can amend your booking to reflect this, to make an ad hoc late bus booking please follow the video guide here

Bus passes are booked on an annual basis and are invoiced termly, starting with the Michaelmas Term fees. Payment must be made by the start of each term in order to guarantee the place.

Those wishing to book a new single or return bus pass will be able to do so from late June.

Ad hoc journeys for the next academic year will be available to book from the bus website from the end of the summer holidays. All ad hoc users must pre-book a seat to travel. A £10 penalty fare will be charged per journey for those who fail to do so.

Should you have any queries please email princethorpe@vectare.co.uk

Year 11 And Upper Sixth Textbook And Locker Key Returns - Reminder

Arrangements for the return of text books and locker keys for Year 11 and Upper Sixth.

Over the Easter holidays pupils received an email on their College Outlook account detailing all the textbooks that they currently have on loan from the Library. These books will need returning after their last exam (pupils can drop the relevant book off after each exam to make it easier if they wish).

All textbooks need to be handed back to the library by 30 June 2025 at the very latest.  Pupils must not hand any of the books listed on the email to their teachers but must be returned to the library.

In addition, all Year 11 and Upper Sixth pupils must return their locker keys to the Pupil Hub before 23 June 2025. Pupils will be reminded on Teams and on Pupil Briefing.

Any textbooks that are still outstanding after this date will be added to the final bill and there will be a £5 charge for any keys lost or not returned.

It may be that pupils have other books that have been given to them directly by their teachers that are not listed on the email, these will need to be handed back the relevant subject teacher.

We are expecting back around 800 books, so assistance with this is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Nicola Treadwell
Head Librarian
