Science Club Gets Electroplating

Year 7 pupils tried out zinc electro-plating in Science Club this week. Electroplating is an important industrial application of electrolysis that involves coating a metal object with another metal to protect or enhance its surface properties.

Copper sheets of metal were first coated with wax, pupils then scratched off a design before the sheets were placed in a bath of zinc sulfate to plate them. The young scientists washed off the remaining wax with hot water and the copper and zinc patterns they’d created were revealed.

It was lovely to see so many pupils turning up to enjoy science in their free time.

Princethorpe’s Year 7 Science club runs every Tuesday in G4 for the first half of lunch.
