Parents Reading Group

Wednesday 7 November 2018 at 7.30pm

Our meeting this month involved a discussion of The Gustav Sonata by Rose Tremain.  The novel paints a picture of post-war Europe with its prejudices and challenges.  At the centre of the novel is a fraught and ultimately unfulfilling relationship between two men from very different backgrounds who meet in childhood.  This is an easy read reflecting some careful research, but is rather tentative in its exploration of big themes including antisemitism and homosexuality.  Whilst we enjoyed it, we felt more could have been made of the material which needed bolder treatment and a tighter plot.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 7 November in the library at 7.30pm.  We will be discussing The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne which comes highly recommended by those who have read it.  Please join us whether or not you have read this book.  We are a friendly group of readers who welcome newcomers and are always ready to try new reading recommendations.
